Save the date! My memoir workshop returns this fall

In the closing moments of my memoir workshop, someone always exclaims, "Five o'clock already? The hours flew by!" Or words to that effect. No one can believe it's so much fun to focus hard for a whole day on pulling a vivid, forward-driving tale from the raggedness of real life. Now's your chance to find out what you've been missing. I've just scheduled fall sessions for October 22 and November 12.

Unlike every other memoir workshop I know of, mine is for women only, with enrollment limited to eight. Our story-shaping table has the intimacy of your favourite corner in the cafe where you meet old friends. My goal is getting you to the heart of your story, not getting you published, so I'll ask lots of clarifying questions. I'll be nudging your story toward the shape and the tone that it needs, as opposed to what editors or agents might require. I don't treat your work as a broken thing to be whipped into shape; all my suggestions will flow from what you're already doing right. Whether you're just starting out or have already racked up some bylines, I'll identify the most important steps you can take toward a stronger second draft. And I'll send you home keen to get started.

When: October 22 or November 12, 9:30 - 5 (both Saturdays)

Where: Verity Women's Club, 111d Queen St. East, Toronto

Homework: A first-person story (maximum 2000 words), due approximately two weeks in advance

How much: $350 + HST ($395.50), including lunch, refreshments and a signed copy of my memoir, My Mother's Daughter

For more information, visit the online home for the workshop (I'm particularly proud of the testimonials) or message me directly: rona@ronamaynard.com.

Ms. Maynard,
I have not been to Canada since I was 15 and would dearly love to come to your workshop. I am not sure this far in advance if I will be able to come to the one in October. Guess what I am trying to ask is, exactly when is the last deadline for the fees? Maybe by some stroke of luck I will be able to come up there after all. A lot can happen between now and then.
Take care and God bless,

Lynne, I'm glad to hear of your interest and would love to meet you at the workshop. You'd be my first student from south of the border. I'll be in touch personally to answer your question./ Rona

Ms. Maynard:

I`m Lorena and I`m twenty nine years old. I `ve not read the book but I would like to do it. I can`t buy yet, maybe the next month, I`m really excited to read it, because is about an interesting theme. To begin I would like to tell you that I didn`t know my mother. She died when I was around 2 , so I didn`t have the oportunity to know her well. My relatives told me some things about her but I always thought that it`s not enough. I would like to know more, but not many of them have the interest to tell me much more, or they don`t know much more. I think if I know more about her I `ll understand more my life or understand me and the way I`m doing my life I hope you can get what I`m trying to say. Sometimes I feel like a ship without helm, without direction. I `m sure what I want to be, I love english and I want to teach so I decided to become an english teacher, but it`s really good to know where you came from, not the place I mean the story. That `s why I tel you congratulations! Now you know more about your mother, thanks for writing the book I believe it`ll help me to brig a little direction to my life. Sorry for having bored you with so long paragraph. I`m from Argentina and I`m studying at university , to be more specific at UNC (universidad nacional de cuyo) I want to be an english teacher. Thanks for your time. When I finish to read the book I`ll write you again. Bye.

Hi, Lorena, and thank you for writing. My apologies for taking so very long to reply. Your mother is the key to you, as every mother is to her daughter. I hope you succeed in learning more about her. It's an important quest. Stay with it!
